Officially designated the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) Mark I, it replaced the longer 1895 Lee-Enfield with a shorter, handier design measuring 44.5 inches (111.6 cm). The rifle combined the bolt-action system developed by Scots-American inventor James P. Lee with rifling standardized at the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield, consisting of five grooves with a leftward twist. Chambered for the .303 British cartridge, the Lee-Enfield used a 10-round detachable box magazine, which could be reloaded quickly with five-round stripper clips or single cartridges. Though it lacked the long-range accuracy of the American Springfield rifle, the Lee-Enfield offered a significant advantage in firepower, as its larger magazine and smooth bolt action allowed for a faster rate of fire. Serving as the standard weapon of British infantry in both World War I and World War II, the Lee-Enfield went through multiple variations and became one of the most produced and enduring military rifles in history.
