The taper on Blackout's custom barrel extension mates with a taper inside the first barrel nut, and a second taper on the barrel profile mates with a taper inside the second barrel nut. That push-pull relationship keeps the barrel bore and the upper receiver concentric while stabilizing the chamber, adding rigidity and harmonic dampening right over the chamber for a smoother shooting experience and longer-lasting accuracy. It also gives the handguard an exceptionally rigid base, so there is no handguard deflection and far less point-of-impact shift from bumps and impacts.HELIX Gas Regulating Barrel SystemThe HELIX system puts an adjustable gas control knob directly on the barrel, so you can tune gas flow for running suppressed or unsuppressed without tools. It uses a robust detent system, an M42 cobalt steel adjustment rod and a high-temperature spring, and Blackout Dynamics proved the design through 1,500 rounds of accelerated full-auto testing with zero failures.Upper Receiver and Dust CoverThe upper receiver is machined from aerospace grade aluminum with enhanced walls for more rigidity while keeping a low profile. The dust cover is fully contained in the upper: instead of relying on a C-clip, the hinge pin is held in place by the barrel nut, and a thin locking groove lets the dust cover's ball detent cut its own channel for a positive, audible lockup and exact alignment. This configuration uses a forward assist upper finished in black.HandguardThe DTL-X handguard completes the monolithic-like look when paired with the upper. It gives you five sides of full-length M-LOK compatible slots, with two more slots at the front for a partial seven-sided layout, plus a full-length Picatinny top rail for optics, lights, lasers and grips. The barrel nut is hidden for a clean look, and the handguard is hand deburred.BarrelThe 12.5" barrel starts as premium 416R stainless steel bar stock that is gun-drilled and reamed with 5R rifling. The blanks are fully stress relieved and air gauged before profiling, threading and chambering, then cryogenically treated and given a polished cryo finish. Linear expansion rings along the barrel profile control heat growth during heavy use, guiding the barrel to expand in the direction of the bore instead of deflecting and shifting your point of impact.Bolt Carrier Group and Charging HandleThis upper receiver group includes a bolt carrier group and a black charging handle. The Blackout Defense bolt carrier is made from 8620 steel, and the shot-peened bolt is made from either 9310 or Carpenter 158 steel.
