When the manufacturer discontinued Cosmoline, it was surprising, given its reputation as an excellent solution for protecting firearms from rust during long-term storage. Fortunately, a suitable alternative is now available. Brownells Rust Veto is a soft, medium-dark, industrial-grade grease composed of highly refined petroleum oils and waxes, along with corrosion and oxidation inhibitors. This formulation effectively preserves and protects stored firearms from rust and corrosion for extended periods. The application and effectiveness of Rust Veto are comparable to those of Cosmoline. It liquefies when heated to 140 deg F - 170 deg F, allowing for complete penetration and coverage of intricate shapes and recesses through immersion. Additionally, melted Rust Veto can be brushed or swabbed onto the metal surfaces requiring protection.
