The US Army's first standard issue breech loading rifle was the 1873 Springfield "Trapdoor", named for its hinged breechblock which opened like a trapdoor. This modern day reproduction by Cimarron is faithful in appearance and operation while taking advantage of modern metallurgy and industrial technology.
