Cold Steel Soldier's Targe Black 19in. The design has been copied from a much earlier model ( Circas Venenum ) but this Soldiers Targe is much larger and fully encased in polypropylene skin. This makes it much less likely to split or be broken by an improvised club or fist and much less likely to be accidentally thrown to the ground by accident (unlike our Bamboo Buckler which does after all get a little muddy). It is also far less likely to get caught in a sash or on a belt though a chape or cut in the throat or a nasty fall (not that we condone such behavior) so it won't get lost in the shuffle of gear. And just like our Bamboo Buckler this Soldier's Targe comes with a leather bound leather chape a strap and a small nutcracker. For those who want to flex their knuckles a little further a metal hilt - though perhaps not of the more sinister variety - it looks just like a normal piece of civilian mail Though not as hefty as our ancient predecessors the Soldier's Targe was almost comically oversized Once you try it you may be hard pressed to find a better (and safer) substitute.
