These handguns did not typically require a special type of ammunition, making them easy for Southern troops to acquire and operate. The brass frame "Navy Type" revolvers are identified with the Confederate manufacturers Griswold & Gunnison, and Leech & Rigdon. Brass was used for the frames because of the scarcity of iron in the United States. They were modeled after the Colt Navys and feature a blued 7 1/2" octagon barrel.
