The Bodyguard 380 operates on a locked breach design, which soaks up recoil fairly well compared to blowback operated 380s of similar size and weight. A hammer fires the pistol by means of a long, double-action-only (DAO) trigger pull; an external thumb safety blocks the hammer and locks the slide in the closed position by moving it up.
