Description
U.S. marked Colt Single Action Army chambered in .45 Colt. The serial number (35192) dates the revolver to 1877. The included Kopec letter suggests that it was issued to the 5th US Cavalry Regiment before being stored in a state militia's arsenal, which would explain why it wasn't subjected to the Ordnance Department's recall of 1893 and converted to an Artillery model. The serial number matching cylinder and barrel appear to have been swapped out at the factory during assembly. It has the three-line patent date marking on the left side of the frame followed by "U.S.". Matching serial numbers are on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap, with the cylinder bearing the serial number "35000". The grip has faint cartouches on both sides under a later added varnish. The accompanying factory letter lists this as one of 200 revolvers delivered to the U.S. Government inspector at the Colt plant on 13 February 1877.
