Description
U.S. marked Colt Single Action Army chambered in .45 Colt. The serial number (5211) dates the frame of the revolver to 1874 and started its life as a Cavalry Model with 7-1/2 inch barrel and possibly issued to the US 7th Cavalry Regiment. Like most U.S. revolvers, the gun was arsenal refurbished and the barrel cut down to 5-1/2 inches. From 1895 to 1903 several "U.S." marked Single Action Army revolvers were returned to either the Colt factory or Springfield Armory where they were dismantled, refinished, and modified to 5-1/2-inch barrel length for use with smokeless powder. The mass arsenal rebuilds resulted in a mix of serial numbers and markings. The trigger guard ("8165") dates to 1875 and the back strap ("73410") dates to 1881. The underside of the barrel is double stamped with a "P" proofs and has no inspector marks. The right grip has inspector stamp and are dated 1903. The left side of the frame has the two-line address followed by "US." The included Kopec and Colt factory letters confirms the reissue of the frame to the U.S. government inspector at Springfield Armory on 16 June 1903.
