These Colt pistols were carried by Railway Express couriers. Railway Express was a Company formed by combining several independent agencies, with the purpose of simplifying transport of goods in WWI. It operated on the railways in a similar manner to FedEx operating in the air today. The couriers were armed to protect the high value packages they were contracted to deliver.
