Initially crafted with the American market in mind, the SUP (universal self-loading pistol) has gained global acclaim as a precise and exceptionally reliable handgun. The design principles for the SUP drew heavily from features favored by us law enforcement and military personnel. Uniquely American controls, influenced by iconic designs like the Government model 1911 pistol, shaped the Up's design. Employing a fiber-reinforced polymer frame strengthened by stainless steel inserts in areas subjected to stress and friction, the use of polymer materials in handgun production was pioneered by HK over 30 years ago with the VP70Z and P9S pistols. The Up's control lever, which functions as both a safety and decoking lever, is conveniently mounted on the frame for swift accessibility, setting it apart from slide-mounted safeties prevalent in many semi-automatic pistols. The modified Browning-type action combined with a patented recoil reduction system curbs recoil impacts on pistol components and diminishes the recoil forces perceived by the shooter. This very system has been exhaustively tested and validated in the HK mark 23 pistol tailored for the U.S. Special operations Command. The Up's recoil reduction mechanism remains unaffected by the type of ammunition used and necessitates no specialized adjustments or maintenance. It effectively operates across all SUP models.
