The Ruger MKII has a tough steel plate with raised ribs on the grip but the Hogue grip wraps around the frame rather than has the fingers slide onto it making it a more positive grip while shooting. Rubber is used to create the wraparound design so it adds very little weight. But since it is framed in rubber it will have a very long life. Hogue usually only shapes the outside of the grip and adds a small area of stiffening material to the inside at the wrist where it contacts the frame.
