Springfield Armory 1898 Krag-Jørgensen Sporter 30-40 Krag 20" Rifle

The Springfield Armory manufactured the Krag-Jørgensen for the U.S. military from 1892 to 1903, chambered in the iconic .30-40 Krag cartridge. Civilian hunters loved the Krag's buttery-smooth action but hated hauling a 30-inch military rifle through the woods. It became a widespread mid-century gunsmithing practice to throw away the upper wooden handguards, cut the long 30-inch rifle barrel down to a handy 20-inch or 22-inch length, and pin a new front sight onto the muzzle.
