Springfield Armory 1903 Rifle 30-06 Springfield 22" Barrel

The U.S. Springfield M1903 Rifle featuring a 22" barrel represents a distinct departure from standard military production. Unlike its predecessor, the .30-40 Kragwhich was issued as both a 30-inch rifle and a 22-inch carbinethe standard M1903 Springfield was designed as a "universal short rifle" issued exclusively with a 24-inch barrel. Following World War I and World War II, the civilian market was flooded with surplus M1903s. Hunters loved the ultra-strong Mauser-style action but found the full military wood handguards and 24-inch barrel layout too heavy for dense woods hunting. It became a classic mid-century practice for gunsmiths to cut the barrel back by two inches to a handy 22-inch length, crown the muzzle, and remove the heavy front sight bands.
