The Remington Model 788 was developed to fill a perceived niche for an everyday gun in the Remington line up. The idea was to claim the everyday hunter, looking for a rifle without breaking the bank for a Model 700. They feature a hardwood stock with a raised comb, more use of plastic parts, and uniquely, a rear locking bolt system. The net result was something of a fiasco as the rifle shot so well, it cannibalized sales from the more profitable 700 line. This one, in addition to the above, features a left-handed operation and is chambered in 6mm Rem, Remington's version of the .243 Winchester.
