Savage ~ Model 99 ~ .300 Savage

For sale is a beautiful example of a vintage Savage Model 99 lever-action rifle chambered in the classic .300 Savage cartridge. Manufactured in 1953 at the Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts factory with serial number 708411, this firearm represents the absolute pinnacle of post-WWII American sporting design. Arthur Savage's hammerless, side-ejecting platform was decades ahead of its time, replacing the traditional tubular magazine with a revolutionary internal rotary box magazine. This mechanical innovation utilizes a specialized rotary spool to maintain the rifle's flawless center-balance regardless of how many rounds are loaded. Crucially, it safely accommodates aerodynamic, pointed spitzer bullets rather than blunt-nosed rounds, completely eliminating the danger of a bullet tip accidentally igniting the primer of the cartridge ahead of it under recoil. The .300 Savage cartridge itself was a ballistic pioneer, specifically engineered in 1920 to deliver the legendary power of a .30-06 Springfield within a lightweight, short-action frame, pushing a 150-grain bullet at an impressive 2,630 feet per second. This particular 1953 specimen is in very good condition and functions flawlessly, featuring a crisp factory trigger that breaks remarkably clean at an even 4 pounds according to a Lyman digital scale. The metal retains a beautiful factory bluing that still shines brightly, showing only minor, honest wear on the typical high spots and high edges from careful field use. The handsome walnut stock displays excellent natural beauty, exhibiting only minor, typical pressure dings common for a well-cared-for hunting rifle of this vintage. This historic model is configured with a desirable 24-inch barrel and features a slightly larger, comfortably filled-out forearm style that offers an exceptionally solid grip and superb muzzle control. Adorning this incredible time-capsule hunting package is a premium, period-correct Bausch and Lomb 2.5-8x variable power scope, perfectly married to a vintage integral adjustable scope ring mounting system. This is a wonderfully balanced, mechanically brilliant, and completely period-correct piece of mid-century American firearms history that is perfectly outfitted and ready for a collection or the deep woods.
