Description
For sale is a beautiful, highly collectible example of a pre-WWII vintage Savage Model 99 lever-action rifle chambered in the classic .300 Savage cartridge. Manufactured in 1938 at the original Utica, New York factory with serial number 379965, this firearm stands as a bare-bones masterpiece of mid-century American sporting design. Arthur Savage's hammerless, side-ejecting platform was decades ahead of its time, replacing the standard tubular magazine with a revolutionary internal brass rotary box magazine. This mechanical marvel maintains the rifle's flawless center-balance regardless of how many rounds are loaded, while safely allowing the use of high-velocity, pointed spitzer bullets without the risk of accidental primer ignition in a tube. The .300 Savage cartridge itself was a ballistic pioneer, specifically engineered in 1920 to mimic the powerful .30-06 Springfield's capabilities within a short-action frame, rocketing a 150-grain bullet at over 2,600 feet per second. This specific 1938 specimen is in excellent condition and functions flawlessly, featuring a crisp trigger that breaks at an exceptionally clean, even 3 pounds according to a digital Lyman gauge. The metal exhibits beautiful original factory bluing highlighted by a faint, honest patina and light edge wear on the receiver, giving it an incredible vintage character. This rifle features crisp factory iron sights and a slightly wider, hand-filling forearm style that offers an exceptionally solid and comfortable grip out in the field. Operating with a smooth, lock-tight lever cycle that cocks the internal striker on the closing stroke, this unmolested pre-war Savage 99 handles beautifully as a traditional iron-sight hunter, yet remains completely ready to be scoped for a high-precision modern hunting experience.
