First used in combat during the Philippine–American War, it was officially adopted as the standard infantry rifle on June 19, 1903. The M1903 saw extensive service in World War I and was gradually replaced by the semi-automatic, eight-round M1 Garand starting in 1936. However, due to shortages, it remained in frontline use during World War II. It also served as a sniper rifle in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
