Description
The Trapdoor Springfield was arguably one of the most significant leaps in firearms technology for the U.S. Army. This allowed the transition from muzzle-loading paper cartridges to breech-loading self-contained metallic cartridges. This particular rifle is a later updated model of 1884 and is chambered in .45-70 Government. This rifle is in very good condition relative to other examples. There is evidence of some very minor pitting toward the muzzle end of the barrel, but the bore seems to be in good shape. There are no visible cracks in the stock. The color from the hardening process is still visible on the inside of the breech block. There is a reproduction sling installed. *This rifle was designed to fire .45-70 black powder cartridges, not modern .45-70 cartridges loaded with smokeless powder/modern propellants.
