Description

U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1873 "Trapdoor" Infantry Rifle (Manufactured 1884) Up for sale is a beautiful, historically significant U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor single-shot infantry rifle. Manufactured at the historic Springfield Armory in 1884, this rifle showcases incredible preserved craftsmanship. Far from just a "wall hanger," this is a fully functional, tight, and mechanically superb piece of 19th-century American military history. Condition & Aesthetics: Metalwork: Features a gorgeous, completely original aged patina across the receiver, barrel, and lock plate.Wood Stock: The original walnut stock is in great shape with minimal handling marks considering its age. The wood-to-metal fit remains tight and excellent.Markings: Incredibly crisp and clear stampings. The lock plate features the traditional U.S. Springfield eagle emblem. The breechblock retains bold U.S. Model 1873 markings, and the stock features highly legible inspectors' cartouches. Mechanical Performance & Specifications: Serial Number: 285484 (Confirmed production toward the end of 1884/early 1885 transition).Caliber: .45-70 Government.Action: The trapdoor breech mechanism locks up tight with zero wobble. The hammer drops with sharp, positive clicks on both half-cock and full-cock positions.Trigger: Outstanding, crisp trigger break with no mushiness.Sights: Original military open sights. The elevation markings and mechanical adjustments are smooth, clear, and perfectly functional.Bore: Well-preserved rifling with a clean, functional channel. Historical Duty Context: While the Springfield Armory did not maintain individual logs matching serial numbers to specific soldiers or regiments, a rifle built in 1884 with this serial range was manufactured right during the height of the U.S. Indian Wars out West. Because it survived in such excellent mechanical shape rather than being ridden ragged on the frontier, this rifle most likely saw duty with an infantry regiment stationed at a secondary garrison or a state National Guard unit. Many late-production 1873/1884 rifles were also actively deployed a decade later during the Spanish-American War. This is a premier addition for any collector who values crisp markings, historical authenticity, and functional excellence in a classic service rifle.
