Description

For sale is a sporterized rifle built on an Austrian Steyr Model 1912 Mauser receiver. The Steyr Model 1912 Mausernot to be confused with the Steyr M1912 "Steyr-Hahn" pistolwas a bolt-action rifle which was essentially a copy of the German Gewehr 98 military rifle. The Steyr 1912 was built in Austria largely for military export purposes, though was also pressed into Austro-Hungarian service during the First World War. Originally chambered in 7x57mm Mauser, the rifles were purchased by countries including Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Chinaeven being used during the Mexican Revolution. Other countries also made their own adaptations on the Steyr 1912, including the VZ 98/22 rifle and VZ 12/33 carbine of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia's 24B rifle, rechambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser (8mm Mauser). This rifle features a Model 1912 receiver as the base, with a Mauser-pattern bolt which may or may not be original to the receiver itself. The bolt has had its original safety lever removed and the action instead features a two-position safety above the grip tang, similar to those found on many typical modern rifles. The trigger group is of Spanish origin and features a grooved trigger texture. The rifle has a 21 ½" York-marked target profile barrel and is marked only with a serial number and "7.62mm" as the caliber marking with Birmingham proofmarks. Our best guess is that it is a 7.62mm NATO chambering. The rifle is set in an oil-finished Monte Carlo-style sporter stock with cheek rest, rosewood grip cap, and plastic forend cap. The stock wears a Pachmayr rubber slip-on buttpad and an Avid Optical 3-9x40mm scope set in Weaver rings and bases. The internal magazine is bolted closed and should hold 5 rounds. This rifle has a significant amount of surface pitting and finish wear on the receiver. The barrel' finish has some spotted surface rust and pitting, but most of the bluing is in fair condition. The bolt is in good shape, but does also have some noticeable wear on the surface. The stock's forend cap is oversized to the woodpurely a cosmetic flaw. But, the grip tang is missing a piece of wood behind the bolt channel. There are some minor scratches throughout the wood, but there is no damage that would indicate significant damage. The barrel is in largely fair condition, but does have a ring of pitting roughly 4-5 inches in from the muzzle and some light pitting in some areas on the rifling. This rifle does seem to be safe to fire in its current condition. The rifle does come with a rifle sling, but is not attached to the rifle (was previously attached via shoelace, which we did remove at our store).
