Introduced as the successor to the WWII-era Model 44US military trainer, the 144-LS (Lyman Sights) was explicitly designed as an affordable, highly accurate competition rifle for civilian target matches, high school shooting teams, and formal training. The "LS" designation stands for Lyman Sights. Unlike earlier base models that used standard Mossberg apertures, the 144-LS shipped from the factory with a premium Lyman 57M micro-click adjustable rear peep sight and a Lyman 17A hooded front target sight featuring interchangeable inserts. The firearm includes a specialized target trigger with a grooved face to prevent finger slippage. It features an internal adjustment screw, allowing shooters to safely lighten the pull weight for clean target breaks.
