Description
For sale is a beautiful example of a vintage Savage Model 99 lever-action rifle chambered in the classic .300 Savage cartridge. Manufactured circa 1960 with serial number 1005439, this premium firearm hails from a highly collectible transitional era as Savage production shifted to its Westfield, Massachusetts facility. Arthur Savage's hammerless, side-ejecting design was decades ahead of its time, replacing the standard tubular magazine with a revolutionary internal rotary magazine. This mechanical marvel utilizes a specialized rotary spool to maintain the rifle's flawless center-balance regardless of how many rounds are loaded. Crucially, it safely accommodates aerodynamic, pointed spitzer bullets rather than blunt-nosed rounds, completely eliminating the danger of a bullet tip accidentally igniting the primer of the cartridge ahead of it under recoil. The .300 Savage cartridge itself was a ballistic pioneer, specifically engineered in 1920 to deliver the legendary power of a .30-06 Springfield within a lightweight, short-action frame, pushing a 150-grain bullet at an impressive 2,630 feet per second. This particular 1960 specimen is in very good condition and functions flawlessly, featuring a crisp factory gold-plated trigger that breaks at 3.8 pounds according to a Lyman digital trigger pull gauge. The factory bluing still shines beautifully, showing only minor, honest edge wear in the usual high spots. The hand-selected walnut stock retains its striking natural beauty, exhibiting only minor, typical pressure dings from gentle field use. This highly optioned, mid-century model includes the iconic "fish-scale" pattern machined into the cartridge carrier, a classic aesthetic hallmark of 1960s production. Completing this pristine, vintage hunting package is a period-correct, American-made Weaver K4-1 fixed 4-power scope in excellent working condition, anchored by solid USA-made Weaver mounts. This is an exceptionally well-balanced, remarkably accurate, and mechanically unique piece of American firearms history that is perfectly outfitted and ready for the field.
