Its design keeps the buffer spring from rubbing against the inner wall of the buffer tube, which the manufacturer states provides smoother, quieter operation.
The second stage is intended to reduce felt recoil. The buffer mass is designed to stay under constant tension against the bolt carrier. The black assembly weighs 5.7 ounces. The Gen 4 version does not include the O-ring on the weight.
