It is intended to keep the buffer spring from rubbing against the inner wall of the buffer tube, supporting smooth, quiet operation, while its second stage is meant to reduce felt recoil.

The assembly is finished in black and weighs 3.3 ounces. It fits AR-15 carbine buffer tubes and is listed for 223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO. The buffer mass is designed to stay under constant tension against the bolt carrier. Most bolt carriers have a rear opening larger than .60 square inches, but a few models with smaller openings will not function with this assembly.
