Following their primary deployment, many were transferred to police forces and reserve military units for continued use in auxiliary roles. In these secondary capacities, the rifles were often modified by their individual users—resulting in a wide variety of configurations. No two examples are exactly the same, reflecting both the practical needs and personal preferences of their handlers.  Common differences include bolt style, removal of sight hoods, missing or replaced buttplates, and significant variation in stock type and wood grain. These rifles reflect a practical, user-driven approach to maintenance and customization, with each example telling its own story of extended service and adaptation. The Mauser 98 action is a highly regarded and reliable bolt-action mechanism, considered by many to be the foundation for modern bolt-action rifles.  These FN Mauser 98 rifles were produced as sporting versions of the German Military Gewehr 98, typically used for hunting.  FN produced many of these rifles (based on the Mauser 98 action) for military and commercial purposes.
