Hornady Backcountry Defense DGH is a factory centerfire handgun cartridge in 500 S&W Magnum, loaded with a 500-grain jacketed soft point bullet. It is intended for hunters, guides and backcountry travelers who carry a large-frame revolver in remote terrain, including bear and big game country.

The load uses Hornady's DGH bullet design, which is described as providing deep penetration and minimal deflection through heavy bone and muscle. Cases are brass with boxer primers, and the brass is reloadable. Each box holds 20 rounds, and ten boxes are packed per case.
